Introduction
The International
Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS) recognises
the global nature of environmental
health and safety issues and its responsibilities to member
societies. Also IFBLS
recognises that the environment of our
planet is not a renewable resource. Responsible
disposal of pathological infectious material,
and taking a share in the responsibility
of protecting the environment for future
generations, has always been a major consideration
of medical technologists.
The IFBLS forms the
foundation by providing leadership in attaining global progress

problems. The IFBLS will contribute to
the transfer of environmentally sound procedures
throughout the world network of its
member associations.
The IFBLS objective is to make member associations
and technologists world wide more aware of environmental
issues and consequences of initiatives.

its activities in a manner that conserves the environment
and protects the safety and health of
its employees and member associations."
Policies
The IFBLS shall Promote
the advantages of a quality program such as ISO 9002 and
ISO 14001 as a structured method
of ensuring environmental awareness.
These standards contain specific criteria
regarding disposal of infectious toxic and chemical wastes.
A laboratory that is
certified to ISO 9002 will already have 60-70% of ISO 14001
requirements implemented.
Provide
employees with a safe and healthy workplace
Provide work areas that
are in accordance with occupational Health and Safety Standards.
If the operation of the Executive
Office is contracted to a supplier, then the IFBLS shall
ensure that the contracted agent
is sensitive to these issues.
Protect
the Environment by conserving natural resources
Continuously improve our environmental
performance promote safe transportation of hazardous materials
reduce pollution within our
operations conserve the use of energy fuel and water promote
an awareness amongst our global member
associations
Distribute information in an
environmentally way promote a preventable approach to minimize
adverse environmentally effects.
Encourage member associations to communicate recent
advances in hazard identification and appropriate
safety precautions to their members.
